Common issue: Some security software may interfere with the ability for Firefox to communicate with other applications (such as KeePass) that are running on your PC; some may cause KeeFox to respond very slowly and others may prevent KeeFox from contacting KeePass at all (usual symptom is a perpetual “Launch KeeFox” button on the toolbar even when KeePass is running). You may need to add an exclusion for Firefox and/or KeePass in order to stop your security software from interfering with these applications or use alternative security protection.
KeeFox is available as a Firefox add-on (it’s not currently on the official Firefox add-ons site).
The add-on installer contains everything needed to load the KeeFox add-on into Firefox as well as a few components that are required to enable the link between the KeeFox add-on and the KeePass Password Safe application. If required, the Microsoft .NET Framework and KeePass Password Safe will be downloaded from Microsoft and Sourceforge respectively.
Upgrade instructions
The upgrade process can be a bit complicated, particularly when upgrading from versions earlier than 0.8, so follow the guidelines in the table below and if all else fails please try uninstalling the KeeFox add-on, KeePass and the KeePassRPC plugin (KeePassRPC.plgx) before doing a fresh install.
| Your current version | Upgrade instructions |
|---|---|
| 0.8 or higher | Just install the new add-on version into Firefox and follow the upgrade instructions that appear in Firefox (KeePass needs to be running before KeeFox can work out that you need to upgrade but you should close it once the upgrade instructions appear). |
| 0.7.6 or 0.7.7 | Please delete KeePassRPC.plgx from your KeePass plugins folder, clear the plugin cache and shut down KeePass before you install the new add-on version. |
| 0.7.5 or earlier | KeeFox now relies on a different KeePass plugin – it used to use KeeICE but now requires KeePassRPC. You should manually remove the KeeICE.plgx file from the plugins folder of KeePass and clear the plugin cache before installing the latest version of KeeFox.
Uninstall KeeFox from Firefox add-ons (no need to restart immediately). You can now perform the upgrade by installing the new KeeFox add-on and restarting Firefox when prompted; after the restart, go through the setup procedure to re-establish the link between KeeFox and KeePass. If you have chosen to prevent changes in KeeFox from being automatically saved to your password database, you will need to re-enable this option in KeePass in Tools / KeePass (KeePassRPC) options. |
Download and Installation instructions
Make sure you are viewing this web site in Firefox 3.5 or higher and then install the KeeFox Firefox add-on.
After restarting Firefox you should see a setup wizard load in a new Firefox tab. This will guide you through installing the things your computer needs to run KeeFox and then launch KeePass Password Safe so that you can log in to (or create) your secure password database.
